For Military Spouses Day this year, we wanted to highlight someone special! Our heroes in uniform aren’t the only brave ones! Being a military spouse comes with its own challenges and rewards too. We asked Debbie Marino of Orlando, FL to tell us about her new role as military spouse.
AFVC: Tell us a little about yourself and your spouse. How long have you been a military spouse? Debbie: I What branch does your husband serve in?
Debbie:I met my husband Anthony in 2019. At the time I had never dated or even known anyone close to me that was in the military. Anthony has been in the Army for the last 14 years. He serves in the Florida National Guard as an Electronics and Missile systems warrant officer.
I have been a Military spouse since September 21, 2020.
AFVC: What is the hardest part of being a military spouse?
Debbie: The hardest part is the uncertainty of the future. We have been very lucky so far that he has only been activated once since we met. This was for COVID duty. It can be difficult to make plans far out in the future because at anytime he can be called up to deploy. Deployments can vary in length but usually we are not able to see our husbands on a regular basis. As a military spouse I have grown a huge appreciation for the sacrifice our military women and men make for our country.
AFVC: What is the most rewarding part about being a military spouse?
Debbie: The most rewarding part of being a military spouse has been learning about a world I had never been a part of.
AFVC: What advice would you give other military spouses in your position?
Debbie: I would tell other spouses to be patient and be flexible. Stay strong and always have open communication.
AFVC: Now for something a little more lighthearted - Where is your favorite travel destination and where do you hope to travel to next?
Debbie: My favorite travel destination has to be Greece! And Hawaii is our next destination! We will be traveling there for our first wedding anniversary!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share a little bit of your world with us, Debbie! Thank you to you and to your husband for your bravery and sacrifices you both make to keep our country safe. We hope you both get to relax and enjoy that dream vacation together soon! Happy Military Spouses Day!
