Turks and Caicos Islands
The Turks and Caicos Islands are where Caribbean vacation dreams are born. With an average of 350 sunny days a year and with lows in the 70s and highs in the 80s, the weather is perfect for all the beach, surf, and waves you can handle. Despite that, tourist season tends to run from November to March and, unlike other Caribbean islands, Turks and Caicos Islands tend to pay attention to tourist season. If you plan on traveling during the off season, it’s best to make sure the activities you want to do will be available when you’re there.
The Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) are a group of approximately 30 islands. Eight of the islands are uninhabited so there’s even something for people who want to get away from it all. There are almost as many beaches as there are shades of blue in the water, and the water is pristine due to the coral reefs around the islands.
You can swim, dive, and snorkel. You can even swim with stingrays if you dare. There are land and sea tours, half-day cruises, charter fishing tours, kite boarding, and paddle boarding. If you’ve seen it in a picture of a Caribbean island, you’re probably able to find it here.
If you get tired of clean water, powder-soft beaches, and perfect weather, you can take in some boutique shopping and pick up some artisan jewelry, art, or crafts. If all that shopping starts to wear you down, you can visit any one of the numerous spas and give yourself a mini-vacation during you vacation.
No Caribbean destination would be complete without a festival and TCI has you covered with six major festivals:
Valentine’s Day Cup, a yachting regatta with remote controlled boats.
Kite Flying Competition, Easter Monday, bring your flyers and foils. This public holiday will fill the sky with color. Organizers encourage homemade kits and give an award to the most artistic kite.
Salt Clay Day, end of April, a three-day festival of music, fun, drinks, bicycle racing, kite flying, maypole dancing and any more fun they can possibly fit into three days.
Big South Regatta, late May, a true regatta for amateurs and semi-pros and on land there’s dancing, music, drinking, food, and theatrical performances.
Caicos Classic Annual Release Tournament, late May or early June, off-shore Marlin fishing tournament and celebrating the ones that got away on shore with music, drinking, and food.
Conch Festival, late November, celebrates the culinary delicacy and cultural icon, the conch. You can sample dishes and watch a conch blowing competition.
