Tobago
If you’re looking for a tropical vacation that’s off the beaten path and away from Spring Breakers, Tobago is waiting for your booking. This often over-looked destination tends to be overshadowed by Trinidad or places with better marketing budgets like Jamaica and the Bahamas. This has resulted in Tobago being a popular destination for people looking for smaller crowds, less touristy experiences, more authentic and ecotourists.
Tobago is part of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The official language is English. The coolest months are December - February with lows in the upper 60s and highs in the upper 80s while the rest of the year sees lows in the 70s with highs in the lower 90s. The wet season is June to December and the dry season starts in January and wraps up in May.
Enjoy the Water
Tobago is a popular destination for divers. Explore coral reefs on the southern end or three shipwrecks, one of which was intentionally sunk for divers and as such has no doors or windows.
Pigeon Point Heritage Park has shopping, cafes, and a lovely beach. It’s also a gateway to some spectacular sites. You can rent a glass bottom boat and explore Buccoo Reef; you’re sure to see a variety of tropical fish. You can also boat over to Nylon Pool, a swimming area that’s an in-sea white coral pool and only accessible by boat. Visitors are advised against diving as the water is only about waist deep. If you’re there at night with a dark moon, head over to Buccoo Lagoon and check out the bioluminescent water!
Explore the Land
Tobago Forest Reserve is the world’s oldest protected forest. There are a plethora of hiking trails and you can hike your way to the beautiful Argyle Falls. The water forms a naturally cool and peaceful pool.
The Gasparee Cave System doesn’t have the claustrophobic caves that people normally think of when one mentions spelunking. Some of these caves are naturally sunlit with translucent pools and some of the caves have thriving bat populations.
Taste Something New
The culinary experience in Tobago will be unlike anything else in the world. Culinary influences from the Middle East, India, Africa, Europe, and China have all blended together with Caribbean flair in Tobago.
If you’re visiting before Ash Wednesday, you’ll see, hear, and taste all the gloriousness that is Carnival in Tobago. Carnival is a massive celebration leading into Lent where there’s music, dancing, drinking, and food.
